On an area of 160 kilometres and with 20 kilometres of beaches, the Versilia
stretches along the Tuscan coast from Torre del Lago Puccini to Vittoria Apuana
and includes the towns of Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi, Massarosa, Pietrasanta, Seravezza,
Stazzema and Viareggio.
When you think of the Versilia the sea springs to mind and you already feel the
holiday atmosphere. The region’s beaches and sea have been the fulcrum from which
the region’s culture, social life and fun side all evolved.
But Versilia means a lot more than summer sea and fun in the resort towns of
Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio, it also offers leisure and recreational activities
thanks to its historical and trendy night clubs like the Capannina and Flavio
Briatore’s Twiga respectively in Forte dei Marmi and Marina di Pietrasanta.
And all year around events and special happenings like Viareggio’s famous Carnival
and the many fairs organised in Carrara, make it one of Italy’s liveliest regions.
And of course it is not far away from some of Italy’s most wonderful art cities
like Lucca, Pisa, the Cinque Terre, Portofino, Florence and Siena, all of which
are easy and quick to get to.
The Apuan Alps, which form a backdrop to this very beautiful region, are the highest
peaks in the area and are ideal for trekking and excursions while, to the south,
the Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli park is famous for its splendid walking
and horse-back trails.
Torre del Lago with the annual summer Puccini Festival, where the great composer
Giacomo Puccini lived and wrote his operas, is a not-to-be-missed appointment
for opera lovers.
Versilia offers many opportunities for physical exercise, from golf on the Alisei
practice course in Marina di Pietrasanta or at the Versilia Golf Club, to windsurfing
and the cycle tracks which link Pietrasanta to Viareggio, Torre del Lago
and Forte dei Marmi.
One popular leisure pastime in Versilia, and in particular in Forte dei Marmi
and Pietrasanta, is shopping in the designer boutiques (Armani, Gucci, Prada.
Dolce and Gabbana etc.) which have been present in this part of Tuscany for many
years.
And there are also many interesting opportunities for antique collectors and
hunters.
Versilia’s cuisine goes from seafood to game and often marries them together.
It is a varied and flavoursome cuisine which satisfies even the most demanding
palates and also uses blue fish in simple yet highly refined dishes.
