Pietrasanta, an art city known as the “Little Athens” is a haunt for world famous
artists, and a showcase for art around the world: artists like Botero and Mitoraj
live and work in Pietrasanta.
The fame of “Little Athens” attracts artists from all over the world to work
in the laboratories and ateliers of the city’s marble artists, and during the
summer months many sculpture studios organise personal shows.
Carrara marble was already famous in the 15th century, so much so that Michelangelo
himself used to come here to choose the marble for his works.
Carducci wrote: “What I like is Pietrasanta: a very beautiful town, with a unique
square, a cathedral worthy of a large city and with the Apuan Alps in the background.
And what a countryside around it! What mountanis, what greenery, what shadows,
what rivers, what streams resonating and fresh under the chestnut, olive and orange
trees, and marble quarries flanking the greenery on all sides!”
This poetry perfectly expresses what you will find in Pietrasanta, this little
town with its wealth of art and culture, sea, mountains and nature.
